The Paper Clip
There are times when I’m writing, and I’m nearing a landmark word count - 40,000 words, 80,000 words - or, as it is now, I’m nearing a landmark for me in the short amount of time I’ve been working on my project; I feel like the paper clip should show up and tell me, “great job, Chad, you’re almost there.”
But the androgynous office tool never does.

I’m now a monthly contributor to Construction.
To answer your question from a while ago, Celia, I have yet to read Blue Nights. It is definitely on my list, though.

I never put this on here, but I should for posterity and other purposes. I’m somewhere on that website and I wrote a story about a guy who makes love to his books. Interestingly enough, my mother enjoyed it.
Thinking About Union
Lately I’ve been thinking about my past teaching experience and, more than anything, telling people the inimitable stories I’ve collected from working there.
My favorite story has to do with a young girl - a senior at the time - who walked out of my classroom after telling me “I don’t do what the white man tells me.” The first thing I thought was that I had, luckily,...

A Fitting Present
“Goddamn,” he said to me as he closed the book. “Don’t ever tell me again you can’t write. That’s my birthday present to you.”
-Joan Didion The Year of Magical Thinking
Recently I read The Year of Magical Thinking. Lately I’ve been on a reading binge with the rule that I have to read as many books by female authors as I read books by male authors. Not that I think that Joan Didion, Joyce...

The epitome of Jennifer Egan's Success
”Oh, man. Pun intended. Jonathan Franzen and the boys’ club that backed him, on one side; Jennifer Egan, who published part of Goon Squad in an “anti-chick lit” anthology, on the other. It’s like Sophie’s Choice, if Sophie hated both her kids. Worse, neither book was any fun. Freedom’s characters range from loathsome to despicable, with the author’s contempt dripping from every sentence....

Reader's ADD
Lately the book of short stories has become popular. Many people believe this is so because the world has some sort of ADD epidemic.
For my plan as a writer, I have decided to cater to a future demographic of people with ADHD and write a short story of flash fiction.
You’re welcome, reading community.

Bioshock Movie Falls Out →
It is a shame that MPAA has to turn what could have been a great movie out of a great game into butterflies and petunias. People shoot up in this game. Little girls steal peoples’ souls. HOW CAN THAT BE PG-13!?
What Makes Iago Evil?
For some reason this quote from Didion’s Play it as it Lays reminds me of my roommate. Could it be that he rehearsed one of Iago’s monologues in a Shakespeare class with him…?
Yeah. That’s probably it, actually.
Nonetheless, I am reading this fantastic novel right now. I can’t help loving Maria in the same sense that I loved Patty Berglund. What makes Iago so...
